france & favs

by brittany mahood

in november a dream of mine came true. it’s name was paris.

our ywam base leader, jan schlegel, had work in the world’s fair of photography, the prestigious Paris Photo at the Grand Palais. it’s basically the ‘who’s who’ of fine art photographers. andy warhol, annie leibovitz, henri cartier-bresson and paolo reversi. if you don’t know who they are, that’s okay; just take my word for it…the ‘who’s who.’

it’s impossible not to be inspired at a place like this. i remember tweeting on 11/11/11 [while we were there] that “had my entire heart, mind and soul changed in one conversation. today was overwhelmingly life giving.”

paris, we will meet again.

later, i’ll write about how i once lost these pictures for a day [and camera and lens]. and the story that led them back to me. xo

rice fields, ministry & 4 young boys.

by brittany mahood

i’ve posted about this village before here. and then thailand here and here. oh and here. this is the rice farming village we spent a week in over christmas. the boys dug out their sewage pipes on christmas (merry christmas!) but mostly we spent time with the villagers, eating their local cuisine, making crafts, playing basketball and spending some time in the rice fields.

we were sent to this village by a ministry that combats sex trafficking. often times these villages are targeted because of their lack of resources and connections to the outside world. the parents are promised a better life for their children if they come into the cities; bangkok, chiang mai and pattaya. little do they know that the money that’s being sent home (if any is sent home at all) is coming from child sex slavery. our goal was to bridge a gap between the generations, promote family values, in hopes that the incentive to send their children away would be less appealing. this village had also never heard the name of jesus and we had the privilege of sharing the gospel with them for the first time through our translators.

my hope is that people were moved, lives were changed and the cycle of sex trafficking ends with this generation. ps isn’t it crazy that this happens in the most beautiful locations?….

there is an opportunity to be involved in this ministry. located in chiang mai, Love Acts is taking in 4 boys whose mothers work in the red light district and no longer want to keep their children. they cannot get into an orphanage because technically, they have a living parent. they are looking for support as they undertake the responsibility of taking on four boys. please read this blog post for the full story and contact Bethsaida for more information.

ps thanks for supporting this blog being about both my photography as well as missionary work. the emails i receive are always encouraging so thank you all for reading. xo

bangkok, thailand on film.

by brittany mahood

this past december, i spent a little over a month in thailand.. i’ve posted about the flood relief work and the home of joy orphanage on the blog before. this roll of film was taken on our first day in bangkok, as we went around the city and familiarized ourselves with the culture to get a better idea of the people we would be serving. unfortunately, three of my rolls from this day came out blank. my guess is that the film didn’t like the multiple airport scanners on multiple trips.  but on the bright side, one color roll came out. there always has to be a bright side right?

monks have to go through a 14 cleansing process if a woman touches them. needless to say, i was excited to see one in public.

bangkok

i love getting pictures back after the fact to remind me of my days there. i’m in phoenix right now and this heat reminds me of those long days in bangkok. this weekend i am escaping the heat for a family reunion in florida. harry potter world, you are finally within my reach.

bangladesh sort of day.

by brittany mahood

this place still has a tight grip on my heart strings. and when i was thinking about it today, one woman came to mind.

i plan on doing multiple blog posts with images i’m holding close right now. a blog almost doesn’t feel like the right way to show them, but it’s better than them not being shared at all.

madrid

by brittany mahood

we left with only two for-sures: art shows and a place to sleep. that was all we needed to justify the 29 hour drive across three countries. the idea was to go on ‘tour’ with our art; to showcase what’s happened in the past months. after driving 500 km we realized we budgeted for only half of what we needed for gas. worst case scenario we would be stuck in madrid. there have been worse tragedies, this i know.

in the end, we made it. just another story to go along with the crazy seven month journey we had all been on. it was our last stage of DTS,  and i wanted to strip the layers back, to simplify. nothing is more organic than film, so that’s all i took. these were all shot with a canon 1v on portra 400.

simple & authentic portraits. this is julianne.

julia is not new to this blog. last time it was paris, this time it’s madrid.

ATOM Magazine

by brittany mahood

on may 4th of last summer, i wrote a blog post about going to an arts based DTS with YWAM. the months following that blog post i worked and dreamt of september 3rd when i would finally be starting that season of my life. well 7 months later, i am sitting in our base cafe in herrnhut, germany, with the same feeling in my heart. last night we graduated. our track is finished, our outreach is over, our ministries closed (for now) and the magazine is published. THE magazine. the one i read over and over again last year, longing to one day be apart of it. less than a year later i can joyfully say that God delivered on every desire of my heart. in my hands is the tangible copy of this years ATOM Magazine. the cover image was shot by my dear friend, kelsey, who has a blog here & portraits i captured of her here back in october. the base has a huge heart for europe and are seeing more outreaches stay on this continent. i’m happy to see such a furry, hilariously interesting and beautiful old European woman on the cover. the atom logo was designed by my talented designer friend whitney.

Hand & Cloth was featured in the magazine, with an article i wrote called ‘sewn back together.’

the editor wanted a fun outreach article about what to pack. i asked my friend cooper to help with the content. our friends michael and meagan were willing to bear the ridiculousness and be photographed. i’m happy that my two articles are polar opposite, justice-y and attempting to be funny-y.

overall, i am incredibly humbled and honored to have been a very small part of this years ATOM Magazine. countless hours went in from our editor, photo editor, designers, photographers, artists and writers. over 100 articles were submitted from the base and were selected from there. it truly was the vision for “marriage of the arts” DTS coming to fruition. the entire online edition of the magazine is available here. it’s amazing what a talented, young, jesus-loving group of artist-nobodies can do in 7 months. i heard a pastor say once when explaining something great “you’re beginning to think that the person had help.” and it couldn’t be more true.

Hand & Cloth

by brittany mahood

i had the privilege of shooting a campaign for Hand & Cloth in Bangladesh during my time i served with them in Dhaka. this is an amazing ministry that disciples women coming off the streets and trains them through a program called CUP. at the end of their training, they are offered a job with Hand & Cloth where they receive an income making beautiful kantha – a traditional Bengali quilt made from repurposed vintage sari cloth.

i couldn’t say it any better than Hand & Cloth does themselves, so here is a piece from their website: “Old Testament writers used the Hebrew word רפא (rapha) to refer to healing, especially divine healing. More literally, rapha means to sew together or to stitch. And so our name, Hand and Cloth, is an image not only of the creative work these women are doing, but also of the creative, healing work God is doing in their lives. As each product is handmade by a woman, our hope is that she would come to know that she is handmade by God.”

my lovely friend and outreach team member Bree modeled for the shoot. at the end, our friend and Hand & Cloth employee Saida modeled as well. these women are beautiful. so are the blankets.

chiang mai, thailand.

by brittany mahood

this city was peaceful & exciting at the same time, and i ate way too much pad thai. thailand, i will see you again.

this is peter’s reaction after the tiger’s care taker dug his nails into the back of his leg and made a growling noise. haha.

i left chiang mai about 4 days ago and am now in dhaka, bangladesh. we are connecting with a local church here and tomorrow i start working with a ministry that ministers to women coming out of prostitution. it’s incredibly life giving to be able to use my photography to bless others. this is the life.
